Kaş is the perfect place to relax, offering an abundance of alfresco cafes to wile away the hours, and unique curio shops to wander, all within a beautifully preserved old town on the edge of the Mediterranean. Where Kaş sits today was once the site of ancient Antiphellos and a few remaining ruins are worth exploring within the town. These include a Lycian sarcophagus in the centre of town and a well-preserved theater to the west, as well as some ancient town wall remains near the harbour.
Although there are no beaches in the town itself, many restaurants have platforms which allow you to dive straight into the crystal clear waters of the harbour, offering instant relief from the Summer heat. Not only are the cobblestone streets and traditional architecture of Kaş a major draw for visitors, but also its location within an area known for its adventure activities.
The picturesque harbour is home to gulets and yachts which can whisk you away for day trips or multi-day excursions exploring the pristine coastline and offshore islands nearby. In addition to plenty of beautiful swimming spots, the waters surrounding Kaş are home to some excellent dive and snorkel sites waiting to be explored, as well as the sunken ruins of Kekova. If you want to go under your own steam, then grab a sea kayak and set your own itinerary and pace for the day.
In the mountains which serve as a spectacular backdrop to the town there are plenty of easy walks, as well as more challenging treks on offer, together with mountain biking trails to explore. Nearby Saklikent Gorge is famed for its canyoning and for adrenaline junkies this is the place to visit, or if you travel a little further, there are exhilarating white-water rapids to raft. If you want to take to the skies, then paragliding over Kaş’ harbour allows you to get a birds-eye view on this beautiful region, or venture off on a jeep safari into the surrounding villages where few other tourists visit.
While tourism has boomed along the Turkish Mediterranean, Kaş has maintained its charm for being unspoiled and intimate and makes a great base for exploring all that is on offer in this corner of the Mediterranean.
